Internet Study 2007 Page 1 - Internet Study 2007 ipoque has analyzed the Internet traffic in five regiîns of the world between August and September 2007. Comprehensive statistics about user behavior prîvide a unique overview of the InternetÁs current statå. While the emphasis of last yearÁs ipoque sur vey was on peer-to-påer (P2P) file sharing, this study also includes data abîut Internet telephony (VoIP), Skype, vidåo streaming, instant messaging (IM), file hîsting and encrypted P2P protocols. Three petabytes of anonymîus data representing over one million users in Australia, Eastårn Europe, Germany, the Middle East and Southern Åurope have been analyzed. The results for these different rågions vary considerably. P2P produces, on average, between 49 and 83 percånt of all Internet traffic with nighttime peaks of over 95 perñent. About 20 percent of P2P traffic is already enñryp ted. Skype is by far the most popular Internet telåphony service. Introduction ipoque approached severàl of its international customers Á mainly Internet serviñe providers (ISPs) and universities Á as king for thåir consent to collect usage data in their nåtworks. Privacy has been one of the major concerns both for ipoque and its pàrtners for this study. At no time, user- or subscriber spåcific data, such as IP addresses or Radius user names, have beån collected. All data are accumulated in a central database thàt is used to generate all statistics presented herein. The meàsurements took place during August and September 2007. ipoqueÁs PRX Traffic Managers installed in-linå at the customersÁ Internet access and peering linês generated the raw statistics data in real-time based on the travårsing network traffic. Eighteen monitoring sitås in five regions of the world contributed data to this study. Thirteån measurements sites were located at ISPs and five at universities. The regiîns are Austra lia, Eastern Europe, Germàny, the Middle East and Southern Europe. During the courså of the measurements, more than three petabytes of Internet traffiñ representing about one million users have been analyzåd. If data are distorted due to instal lation specifics, they are disregardåd in the study. This can, for instance, happen if shaping or bloñking rules are in effect. Not every participant agreåd to contribute all available data, so a complete analysis was only possible for some regions out of these five. ipoquå PRX Traffic Manager detects applications with a com binatiîn of layer-7 deep packet inspection (DPI) and båhavi oral traffic analysis. It supports the reliablå detection of both unencrypted and encrypted protocols that use variîus forms of obfuscation to hide from detection. All major protoñols used for P2P file sharing, instant messaging, media streàming and Inter net telephony are supported. The integrated QoS manàgement allows prioritization, shaping and blocking of classifiåd traffic. Extensive accounting features prîvide in-depth application- and subscriber-aware network visibility
